The cAMP-response element binding protein (CREB) is a member of the bZIP transcription factor superfamily, which contains a subfamily of cAMP and calcium-responsive transcriptional activators. CREB binds to the cAMP response element (CRE) of the promoters of its target genes upon phosphorylation of Ser133 in the KID domain. The protein kinases activating CREB include protein kinase A (PKA), Akt, protein kinase C (PKC), calmodulin-dependent protein kinase (CaMK), p90 ribosomal S6 kinase (p90RSK) and casein kinase. CREB is involved in signaling pathways leading to pathogenesis and therapy of certain mental disorders, such as schizophrenia.
