Target

Full Name
SULT1E1
Introduction
Estrogen sulfotransferase, also knownas Sulfotransferase, estrogen-preferring, Sulfotransferase 1E1, SULT1E1 andST1E1, is a cytoplasm enzyme which belongs to the sulfotransferase 1family. Sulfotransferase enzymes catalyze the sulfate conjugation of manyhormones, neurotransmitters, drugs, and xenobiotic compounds. These cytosolicenzymes are different in their tissue distributions and substratespecificities. SULT1E1 may control the level of the estrogen receptor bysulfurylating free estradiol. SULT1E1 maximally sulfates beta-estradiol andestrone at concentrations of 20 nM. SULT1E1 also sulfatesdehydroepiandrosterone, pregnenolone, ethinylestradiol, equalenin, diethylstilbesterol and 1-naphthol, at significantly higher concentrations;however, cortisol, testosterone and dopamine are not sulfated. SULT1E1 is a keyenzyme in estrogen homeostasis. It plays a central role in the prevention anddevelopment of human disease.

UniProt ID
Alternative Names
EST; STE; EST-1; ST1E1
Function
Sulfotransferase that utilizes 3'-phospho-5'-adenylyl sulfate (PAPS) as sulfonate donor to catalyze the sulfate conjugation of estradiol and estrone (PubMed:7779757, PubMed:11884392, PubMed:11006110).
Is a key enzyme in estrogen homeostasis, the sulfation of estrogens leads to their inactivation. Also sulfates dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), pregnenolone, (24S)-hydroxycholesterol and xenobiotic compounds like ethinylestradiol, equalenin, diethyl stilbesterol and 1-naphthol at significantly lower efficiency (PubMed:11006110, PubMed:19589875).
Does not sulfonate cortisol, testosterone and dopamine (PubMed:7779757, PubMed:11006110).
May play a role in gut microbiota-host metabolic interaction. O-sulfonates 4-ethylphenol (4-EP), a dietary tyrosine-derived metabolite produced by gut bacteria. The product 4-EPS crosses the blood-brain barrier and may negatively regulate oligodendrocyte maturation and myelination, affecting the functional connectivity of different brain regions associated with the limbic system.
