Target

Full Name
laminin subunit alpha 4
Introduction
Laminin, alpha 4 contains the C-terminal G domain which distinguishes all alpha chains from the beta and gamma chains. The RNA analysis from adult and fetal tissues revealed developmental regulation of expression, however, the exact function of laminin, alpha 4 is not known. Tissue-specific utilization of alternative polyA-signal has been described in literature. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms. Diseases associated with LAMA4 include Cardiomyopathy, Dilated, 1Jj and Familial Isolated Dilated Cardiomyopathy.

UniProt ID
Alternative Names
LAMA3; CMD1JJ; LAMA4*-1
Function
Binding to cells via a high affinity receptor, laminin is thought to mediate the attachment, migration and organization of cells into tissues during embryonic development by interacting with other extracellular matrix components.

Involvement in disease
Cardiomyopathy, dilated 1JJ (CMD1JJ):
A disorder characterized by ventricular dilation and impaired systolic function, resulting in congestive heart failure and arrhythmia. Patients are at risk of premature death.
